********************************************************************** Past Events Grand Opening Sugar Grove Community Park click here for Pictures The Grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new Sugar Grove Park was held on Saturday, August 21st. The dedication of our new park with a ribbon cutting ceremony began at 4:00 p.m. with Mayor Strand introducing the many individuals who had a hand in the project and helped dedicate the park. Those present for the ribbon cutting with Mayor Dutch strand were Council Member Bob Snyder, Borough Secretary Karla LoPresti, County Planning Director Dan Glotz, Dan Morgan, Jeff VanArsdale, State Representative Kathy Rapp, County Commissioner John Eggleston, Project Manager Chris Brown, Regional Main Street Coordinator Kathy Reitinger, Council Members Kevin Nicholas, Jerry Bloomgren and Neal Hoisington . The crowd was treated to a close up look at the new pavilion, sidewalks, lights, tables, and landscaping that has all been added to the existing park. Long time residents commented on the fantastic new handicap access to the park. Many residents also commented on the superb new gardens planted throughout the park. The Hill and Dale Garden club volunteered to design and put in the garden areas in the park along with donating some of the plants. The members and other volunteers worked hard through the summer days in July and August to begin the gardens. Many plants were donated from Sugar Grove area residents. The club planted a variety of hardy mums, autumn joy sedum, thyme, lavender, lime green and dark green large leaf hostas, salvia, peony plants, coreopsis, floribunda rose bushes, crazy daisy plants, liatris, phlox, penstemon, and pink dianthus, as well as some new trees. Additional planting will happen in the spring. The Hill and Dale Garden Club has always been a help to the community since its organization in 1937. The object of the club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs, to aid in the protection of native plants, trees and birds, and to encourage civic plantings. The Community and the Sugar Grove Borough would like to thank donations and time given to the project by Briggs Transportation, John Allen Excavating Inc., Louis Enos, David Hoisington Construction, Sweeney Resources and Conrad Wilson, AMVETS Post 50, Brown's Excavating Services, and many others who gave their times and talents to our new park. The Sugar Grove Borough choose Derck & Edson Associates as the architects for the park due to their experience with actual DCNR grants which have many additional rules not normally involved with a grant. Their experience has been a great help to council members throughout the grant process. The work of bringing the vision together was accomplished by our hard working contractor ICM Innovative Construction Mechanical owner Thomas R. Eaton and his crew. This project was possible due to the Sugar Grove Borough working with Growing Greener Funds distributed through a DCNR Grant, a gift from the Pearl Manross Estate, Sugar Grove Borough funds, donations, and volunteer work. Completion of the park and opening event were also supported with donations from the Sugar Grove AMVETS, Sons of the AMVETS, the American Legion and Sons of the American Legion. Additional items such as benches will be funded and added to the park in an ongoing effort to keep expanding and improving our park. Mayor Strand indicated that there will be opportunity in the future for the community to make donations for more improvements to the park. Great Bluegrass Entertainment during the event was provided in the new park pavilion by The Northern Railroad Bluegrass Band formerly known as the Goodfellas. Residents brought along chairs and blankets to sit around the pavilion and enjoy the music. Sugar Grove resident, John VanDorn, brought his Prinsen Book Organ, built in Belgium, and he played it as people gathered for the event and viewed the park gardens. Refreshments of hot dogs, chips, and beverages were all donated and cooked by the AMVETS Post #50 volunteers. Our Warren County Dairy Princess, Ashley Enos assisted with the cooking. The Sugar Grove Park project began as a request for a small amount of Growing Greener II Funds, but became a larger request when Kathy Reitinger, the Warren County Regional Main Street Coordinator, became involved. Through her suggestions to make the park more ADA accessible and the pavilion larger to accommodate community functions it truly became a community park. Kathy spoke, in person, with Alex Tatanish in Harrisburg and attended park committee meetings. She helped the project move forward, wrote the application and contacted Phil Scrimenti, Representative Kathy Rapp and Senator Mary Jo White in order to gain their support as well as meeting with county commissioners about the project. She has always been able to envision how this project would benefit the township as well as the borough.
Update on 8th Nyla Luvison 5k Run and Race Walk Nyla Luvison Walk Update The Nyla Luvison 5K race and fun walk, which was held last July 11th, was a success with the fund raiser donating a total of $2492.21 to the Warren Cancer Care Center. Paul Tutmaher was recently able to present a check for that amount to Jim Fiscus, who represents the Cancer Care Center at the event. The Nyla Luvison Race Committee should like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to all those people that participated in that cause and to all those who freely donated their time to make this event a continuing success. 8th Annual Nyla Luvison 5K Run and Race Walk - July 10th The 8th Annual Nyla Luvison 5K Race/ Racewalk/Fun Walk will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010. Article below by Paul Tutmaher I am quite amazed that this is the eighth year for the event. Time flies! It seems like only yesterday that we stocked our pantries for an expected Y2K electronic shutdown. I was also surprised to learn that I am 68 years old! I spent about eight months thinking I was still 67 --- this may offer a little insight as to my mental attitude today as I write this article. The 2010 Nyla Luvison event is in the early stages of planning. The Nyla Luvison Race Committee held its first meeting on Monday, April 19. The next scheduled meeting will be Thursday, May 20, in The Bucket Conference Center at 6:00 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Please feel free to come. We can always use the help. This year will see a repeat of the chicken barbecue. Charlie Sanders has agreed to be there again with his excellent barbecue. Takeouts will be available beginning at 10:30 a.m. for $8.00 per dinner. I truly hope you will consider supporting this very worthwhile event by participating in the race/walk or by becoming a sponsor. This year we are encouraging family sponsorships. The cost of the $100.00 sponsorship can be spread out among the family members. You will receive two free T-shirts and the opportunity to purchase an unlimited number of T-shirts at cost (approximately $10). Last year’s donation to the Warren Cancer Care Center from the event was $2,305.71, making the total donated to date around $14,000. I must also state that when I contacted the Cancer Care Center six months ago regarding a news article published in the Times Observer on November 30, 2009, a small discrepancy was noted. The problem occurred because some sponsorship checks were made out to, and then sent directly to, the Cancer Care Center. Over the years some of these checks were not credited to the Nyla Luvison cause. Therefore, we are asking that any sponsors wishing to make out checks to the Warren Cancer Care Center to please do so, but mail the checks in the self-addressed, stamped envelope which is included in the Nyla Luvison sponsorship packet. Please contact me at 814-489-7894 for a packet, and we shall see that this issue is resolved. (Forms for the event are also available on-line at the borough website: www.sugargrovepa.com.) Anyone having questions regarding this problem may contact me, Paul Tutmaher, at 814-489-7894, or Karen Coombs at the Cancer Care Center at 814-723-3300 Below are the forms for sponsorship or registration. Please double click on the form to view full size. At that time you can print the form. Business Sponsor Form Family Sponsor Form Registration Form
