Recent Events 6th Annual Maple Sugar Competition and Pancake Supper - 2007 Click here for Essay Winners or Pictures There was a lot going on at the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department last Friday. While patrons enjoyed a supper consisting of sausage, eggs, applesauce and pancakes with syrup from last year’s John Hood award winner, judges were judging this year’s maple syrup entries, girl scouts were waiting tables, student essay winners were awarded, and local syrup producers were selling maple syrup. This year’s judges for the maple syrup competition were Marcia Madigan, Kevin McIntyre, and Kevin Nicklas. Randy Brown oversaw the judging process. The syrup is judged on color and taste. The class winner of the Supreme Light Amber category was Homer Lindell. Lindell also so took first place in the Supreme Dark Amber category. In the Supreme Medium Amber category the class winner was Dean Morton. Other entrants were David Bauer, Loren Cable, Gene Gruber, Bill Knisley, and George Sanders. The winner of the John Hood Award was Homer Lindell of Mapledell Farm, their 2nd win in a row. This year a new event was added to the syrup competition, a poem/story contest for the students from Sugar Grove Elementary School. The top 3 winners were chosen from over 60 entries. Gus Bauer took first place and he won a $50 gift certificate donated by National City Bank. Andrew Childs won 2nd place and Ryan McKendree came in 3rd. They both received gift certificates to The Bucket in Sugar Grove donated by The Bucket. All three winners also received a maple sugar coloring book and a container of maple syrup donated by Mapledell Farm. This event was a great success thanks to the many volunteers who organized and ran the event. Special thanks goes to the Sugar Grove Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for preparing all the food, the Sugar Grove Community Development Committee for organizing the event, the girl scouts from Troop 380 for waiting on tables, and the maple syrup judges. Dr. Seuss Day at the Sugar Grove Elementary School - 2007 Click Here for Pictures On March 2nd, there were some strange happenings at Sugar Grove Elementary School! From the room with many things topsy-turvy and the reading of “Wacky Wednesday” to the creation of new “letters” following the reading of “Beyond Zebra”, students were hearing the “wacky” tales of Dr. Seuss and enjoying various activities. Everywhere you looked, all teachers and staff were dressed as “The Cat in the Hat.” “THE Cat in the Hat” was Mrs. Madigan, the principal, and all others were “Little Cat A,” “Little Cat B,” and so on. There were children with funny hats and wide eyes. About 50 parents (and grandparents) came to enjoy some or all of the day with their child (grandchild). Parents had also participated in the day by helping make the “Cat in the Hat” outfits. This day was made possible through the funding of the CPT (Concerned Parents and Teachers organization) and Title I. This was a fun day put together by Heidi Dewald and the rest of the school's teachers and support staff.
Sugar Grove Elementary Fun Day - 2006 Click Here for Pictures Sugar Grove Elementary finished off the school year with a fun filled day of crazy competition. Each grade traveled over a course 12 wacky games which took all day to complete. There was the Discus Throw where students threw a weighted sock through a hoola hoop, the Toothpick Javelin event, and Wheel Barrow races. Another wacky event was the dress-up relay where the 2 lines of students took turns dressing up, racing to a tree, removing the dress-up clothes and racing back to hand over the items to the next contestant. Other competitions were the Water Melon Seed Spitting, the Cantaloupe Roll where students raced each other pushing a cantaloupe with their heads and the Sack Races which involved single races to qualify for the winners round and 3 legged sack races. The Tri-Event Relay was held at the playground where contestants had to run up stairs, cross the rock wall, walk down a tube, run to the basketball court and make a basket or try 3 times before racing to the finish line. The Banana Relay was run both forwards and backwards. It was a very warm day so most of the students really enjoyed the Shot Put Water Balloon event. Backwards Baseball was played on the baseball field. The first team to lose 10 runs would be the winners. The hitter used a tennis racquet to hit a tennis ball and had to run the bases backward. The last event was Broom Hockey played on the basketball court. Students used brooms instead of hockey sticks and tried to score with a ball. There was popcorn provided and a picnic lunch. It was a really fun way to end the school year.
Memorial Day Service in Sugar Grove - 2006 Click here for pictures.
Pack 18 Den 3, Webelos 2, of Sugar Grove did spring cleaning in the
Memorial Park downtown. The Scouts weeded and cleaned out the flowerbeds and
around trees. They also scrubbed and pressure washed the Veterans Memorial,
benches, picnic tables and sidewalks. They cleaned up around the park so it
would be ready for the service on Memorial weekend and also to give back to the
community for supporting them.
Many residents of Sugar Grove attended a service to honor all Veterans
killed in support of our country. The Memorial Service was held at the Memorial
Park in downtown Sugar Grove. The presence of the American Legion, the AMVETS,
the Boy Scouts, the Cub Scouts, the junior members of the Sugar Grove American
Legion Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion honored our veterans.
The main speakers were Wes Wilcox, 28 District Commander, Western
Section, Department of Pennsylvania and Gary Fry, Department Commander for the
AMVETS Post 50. Red, white and blue wreathes were placed on the Veterans
Memorial. Taps was played and the Firing Squad performed. The Sons of the
American Legion displayed the Service flags and recited the originality of Taps.
AMVETS presented a Purple Heart watch award and the American Legion presented
Blue Star Banners to families of active duty personal.
After the Memorial Service the AMVETS ran the world famous "Ducks
for Bucks" race. Volunteers kept the ducks going on their journey
downstream. The second place duck held the lead right up to the finish line
where it was passed at the very last moment. The most exciting part of the race
was when a snake tried to sneak in to the line up and startled one of the
volunteers who immediately began racing back up the stream while loudly
announcing the snake’s position.
