Thank You The Community and the Sugar Grove Borough would like to thank those who to part in our Park grand opening. They are Mayor Dutch Strand, Sugar Grove Borough Council Members - Kevin McIntyre ,Kathy Buerkle, Neal Hoisington, Jerry Bloomgren, Kevin Nicklas, Bob Snyder, Dave Slater, Terra LoPresti, and Chisa Niizeki, Borough Secretary Karla LoPresti, County Planning Director Dan Glotz, Dan Morgan, Jeff VanArsdale, State Representative Kathy Rapp, County Commissioner John Eggleston, Project Manager Chris Brown, Regional Main Street Coordinator Kathy Reitinger, The Hill and Dale Garden Club, Briggs Transportation, John Allen Excavating Inc., Louis Enos, David Hoisington Construction, Sweeney Resources and Conrad Wilson, AMVETS Post 50, AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the AMVETS, The American Legion, Sons of the American Legion, Brown's Excavating Services, Derck & Edson Associates, ICM Innovative Construction Mechanical owner Thomas R. Eaton and his crew, The Goodfellas Blue Grass Band, John VanDorn, Diary Princess-Ashley Enos, and many others who gave their times and talents to our new park. The Sugar Grove Park project began as a request for a small amount of Growing Greener II Funds, but became a larger request when Kathy Reitinger, the Warren County Regional Main Street Coordinator, became involved. Through her suggestions to make the park more ADA accessible and the pavilion larger to accommodate community functions it truly became a community park. Kathy spoke, in person, with Alex Tatanish in Harrisburg and attended park committee meetings. She helped the project move forward, wrote the application and contacted Phil Scrimenti, Representative Kathy Rapp and Senator Mary Jo White in order to gain their support as well as meeting with county commissioners about the project. She has always been able to envision how this project would benefit the township as well as the borough. This project was possible due to the Sugar Grove Borough working with Growing Greener Funds distributed through a DCNR Grant, a gift from the Pearl Manross Estate, Sugar Grove Borough funds, and volunteer work. News for the week of August 27th, 2010 Grand Opening Sugar Grove Park The Grand opening and ribbon cutting of the new Sugar Grove Park was held on Saturday, August 21st. The dedication of our new park with a ribbon cutting ceremony began at 4:00 p.m. with Mayor Strand introducing the many individuals who had a hand in the project and helped dedicate the park. Those present for the ribbon cutting with Mayor Dutch strand were Council Member Bob Snyder, Borough Secretary Karla LoPresti, County Planning Director Dan Glotz, Dan Morgan, Jeff VanArsdale, State Representative Kathy Rapp, County Commissioner John Eggleston, Project Manager Chris Brown, Regional Main Street Coordinator Kathy Reitinger, Council Members Kevin Nicholas, Jerry Bloomgren and Neal Hoisington . The crowd was treated to a close up look at the new pavilion, sidewalks, lights, tables, and landscaping that has all been added to the existing park. Long time residents commented on the fantastic new handicap access to the park. Many residents also commented on the superb new gardens planted throughout the park. The Hill and Dale Garden club volunteered to design and put in the garden areas in the park along with donating some of the plants. The members and other volunteers worked hard through the summer days in July and August to begin the gardens. Many plants were donated from Sugar Grove area residents. The club planted a variety of hardy mums, autumn joy sedum, thyme, lavender, lime green and dark green large leaf hostas, salvia, peony plants, coreopsis, floribunda rose bushes, crazy daisy plants, liatris, phlox, penstemon, and pink dianthus, as well as some new trees. Additional planting will happen in the spring. The Hill and Dale Garden Club has always been a help to the community since its organization in 1937. The object of the club is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening among amateurs, to aid in the protection of native plants, trees and birds, and to encourage civic plantings. The Community and the Sugar Grove Borough would like to thank donations and time given to the project by Briggs Transportation, John Allen Excavating Inc., Louis Enos, David Hoisington Construction, Sweeney Resources and Conrad Wilson, AMVETS Post 50, Brown's Excavating Services, and many others who gave their times and talents to our new park. The Sugar Grove Borough choose Derck & Edson Associates as the architects for the park due to their experience with actual DCNR grants which have many additional rules not normally involved with a grant. Their experience has been a great help to council members throughout the grant process. The work of bringing the vision together was accomplished by our hard working contractor ICM Innovative Construction Mechanical owner Thomas R. Eaton and his crew. This project was possible due to the Sugar Grove Borough working with Growing Greener Funds distributed through a DCNR Grant, a gift from the Pearl Manross Estate, Sugar Grove Borough funds, donations, and volunteer work. Completion of the park and opening event were also supported with donations from the Sugar Grove AMVETS, Sons of the AMVETS, the American Legion and Sons of the American Legion. Additional items such as benches will be funded and added to the park in an ongoing effort to keep expanding and improving our park. Mayor Strand indicated that there will be opportunity in the future for the community to make donations for more improvements to the park. Great Bluegrass Entertainment during the event was provided in the new park pavilion by The Northern Railroad Bluegrass Band formerly known as the Goodfellas. Residents brought along chairs and blankets to sit around the pavilion and enjoy the music. Sugar Grove resident, John VanDorn, brought his Prinsen Book Organ, built in Belgium, and he played it as people gathered for the event and viewed the park gardens. Refreshments of hot dogs, chips, and beverages were all donated and cooked by the AMVETS Post #50 volunteers. Our Warren County Dairy Princess, Ashley Enos assisted with the cooking. Sugar Grove Sale Day Preparations are underway for another fun Sugar Grove Sale Days event. This year Sale Days will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010. How does an event such as this get started ? Back in the late 1960’s Mrs. Ruth Grant, wife of Dr. Alfred Grant, held her yard sale on the last Saturday of July each year. The sale was at her home on Patterson Street in Sugar Grove. Everyone turned out for Mrs. Grant’s sale. She started to invite her friends to bring their sale items to her barn and join in the fun. As the years progressed, many who lived on Patterson Street held their yard sales at the same time as Mrs. Grant. The event became known as the Patterson Street Sale. Before long it turned into what we know today as “Sugar Grove Sale Days”. I am sure that Mrs. Grant never imagined how big the Sugar Grove Sale Day would become. Today, there are vendors who travel in each year for the event, local food vendors are on every corner, local store sales, and of course, approximately 50 or more yard sales throughout the town. You can mark your calendar because as with the tradition that Mrs. Grant set in place years ago, the sale is held on the last Saturday of July. News for the week of July 16th, 2010 Nyla Luvison Memorial 5K The 8th Annual Nyla Luvison Memorial 5K Run/Race Walk/Fun was held on Saturday, July 10, 2010. This year saw the highest number of participants to date for the annual event. More than 210 participants registered to compete in the race/walk. Participants who registered for the race were not just from the Sugar Grove Area. Racers each year come from as far away as Pittsburgh, North Carolina, Florida, Arizona, Texas, and even Germany. Many in the Sugar Grove community benefited from the care of Mrs. Nyla Luvision who passed away in the fall of 2002 from malignant melanoma. Nyla contributed greatly to the community. She was a parent and adoptive parent to many of the children she came in contact with through the sports activities at EHS. She was especially active with the cross country and track teams. She was a nurse practitioner with the Sugar Grove Family Medical Center and she was also a Missionary VISA team member. Since her passing the community has held the Annual Nyla Luvision Memorial 5K Fun Run/Walk. Pastor Billy Hughes from the Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, where Nyla attended services, provided an opening prayer prior to the race. Pastor Hughes told the crowd, “Nyla would be so proud of this event and heart of these people gathered here today”. This year the National Guard unit, Alpha Company 642 Air Support Battalion out of Dunkirk/Olean, New York were on hand to assist with the traffic control. A luncheon was provided for the troops at the Sugar Grove Fire Hall. The community was invited to attend the Chicken BBQ and also take some time to show their appreciation to our National Guard members. Joining the National Guard this year were students from Law Enforcement Explorer Post 125 Criminal Justice Program located at the Hughes Education Center in Ashville, New York. The students, who were all seniors in the program, gain credit for working on events such as this with the National Guard and gain the experience of working in areas they may choose as a career. The race kicked off at 10:00 a.m. and as the race progressed through out the Sugar Grove community, members of the town cheered on the participants. The race route started at the back of the Sugar Grove Fire Hall on School Street and travel up Younie Street. The racers turned on to Route 957-Main Street for a few blocks before, turning again on to Mill Street, and then turning on Catlin Hill Road. Then around the corner of Forest Street to Patterson Street, turning on to Jamestown Street for two blocks before turning onto Curtis Street. The participants followed Curtis Street all the way to Pleasant Street and then took Pleasant Street out to a turn around station located past Wayne Gruber’s farm. At the turn around the runners and walkers traveled back down Pleasant Street and around School Street to the Sugar Grove Fire Hall Start/Finish line. This year the results were electronically calculated for the first time. Each runner and walker wore an arm band with electronic tag that recorded their time as they crossed the finish line. Results can be viewed a www.smileymiles.com. The overall winner in the female division this year was Rachel Tutmaher with a time of 20:43 and in the male division was David Pearson with a time of 17:11. The crowd was excited to see that both of this year’s overall winners were Eisenhower High School Cross County Alumni. Trophies were presented to all the first, second, and third place winners in each category by Mike Luvison. The proceeds from the event each year are divided between the EHS Boys & Girls Cross Country teams to help offset expenses and the Warren Cancer Care Center to help in the fight to find a cure for cancer. To date the annual race has provided more than $10,000 to the Cancer Center. Thank you to all the many event sponsors and to the Nyla Luvision Race committee for all their hard work. More photos of race day events can be found at the Warren Times Observer website CU section. The proceeds from the event each year are divided between the EHS Boys & Girls Cross Country teams to help offset expenses and the Warren Cancer Care Center. Over the past 8 years more than $10,000 has been donated to help in the fight to find a cure for cancer. This year families are encouraged to become sponsors in the event. The cost of the $100.00 sponsorship can be spread out among the family members. You will receive two free T-shirts and the opportunity to purchase an unlimited number of T-shirts at cost of approximately $10. Charlie Sanders will be on site again this year with his excellent chicken barbecue. Takeouts will be available beginning at 10:30 a.m. and the cost will be $8.00 per dinner.

Hundreds of people were on the Eisenhower campus for the day. Games began in the early morning and continued into the evening on the ten courts located adjacent to the football field.
