Sugar Grove Community Development Council

The Sugar Grove Community Development Council was formed in 2003 with the objective to make Sugar Grove a better place to live by improving our quality of life.

Since the formation of the group it has joined with Youngsville, Sheffield, and Tidioute in working with the Pennsylvania Downtown Center (PDC) and has applied to the state for a grant to join the Main Street Program. The program has proved successful in other parts of the state in the revitalization of a number of downtown communities.

To learn more about the PDC and the Main Street Program to to www.padowntown.org .

The collaboration of the four municipalities will provide strength in numbers to allow greater access to the government funding that is available for improvement projects.

For the program to be successful it needs the people of the community to make it happen. Yes! That is You. Please look at the committee structure provided below and see where you or a group you already belong to could join and make a difference. It takes concerned citizens like yourselves to form a strong organization that will have a positive impact now and into the future, improving the lives of everyone, young and old, living in the Sugar Grove area.

The Sugar Grove Community Development Council now meets on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at 8:30 am. The group meets at the Sugar Grove Borough Building. We invite you to join us. If you are unable to attend the meetings at that time and would like to know more about the council and what we are doing you can send an email to sugargrove@verizon.net or contact one of the following people.

Main Street Four-Point Approach:

PA Downtown Center, www.padowntown.org, a non-profit organization, advocates the Four-Point Approach to revitalization.  Its strategy is for a core group to recruit people, money, forge coalitions, and create a new way of thinking that supports Main Street’s renewal.  The reason for its success is that it covers a whole range of interrelated issues that affect revitalization.  There are four committees, and several sub-committees, who meet independently to get work done:

1)  Organization Committee:

bulletGets everyone working toward the same goal
bulletBuilds consensus and cooperation among the groups
bulletRecruits other people in town to be members of the committees
    bulletRewards volunteers

2)  Economic Restructuring Committee:

bulletHelps convert unused space into productive property
bulletSharpens the competitiveness of business enterprises
bulletFinds a purpose for Sugar Grove enterprises
    bulletHelps existing businesses expand
    bulletRecruits new businesses

3)  Design Committee:

bulletHelps the town get into top physical shape.
bulletCapitalizes on its best assets such as historic buildings and traditional downtown layout
bulletCreates an inviting atmosphere, created through window displays, parking areas, signs, sidewalks, street lights, and landscaping
bulletConveys a visual message about what Sugar Grove is and what it has to offer

4)  Promotion Committee:

bulletSells the image and promise of Sugar Grove to all prospects
bulletMarkets the district’s unique characteristics to shoppers, investors, new businesses, and visitors
bulletPlans a promotional strategy that forges a positive image through advertising, retail promotional activity, special events, and marketing campaigns, carried out by local volunteers
